Activating: (15 mins.)
- Inform students that you will be playing two short videos for them.
- While watching the videos, have students fill out a compare and contrast organizer.
-What are the differences?
- Play a video clip from The Onion News Network that is related to a topic recently studied in class.
- Play a video clip from The CBC News Video Player that is also related to this topic.
- Have a brief class discussion comparing the two videos.
Acquiring: (35 mins.)
- Split class up into groups of 3.
- Have each find one of the following and write a brief synopsis of:
2. An article written on a legitimate news site (www.cnn.com; www.cbc.ca/news; www.bbcnews.com)
- Ask students to make up their own news story and write a brief synopsis.
- Have students take the three stories (fake, real, and made-up) and prepare them to present them in the form of a news report.
- Take turns allowing the groups to present their news report to the class.
- While the reports are ongoing, have Polleverywhere poll prepared and projected on the Smart Board.
- Through the poll, have students use their wireless devices to guess which story is which.
-Which story is from a fake news site?
-Which story is made-up by the students?
- After everyone has cast their votes, have the students reveal the results.
- Have a brief discussion regarding the stories.
- Continue this process until all the groups have presented their news reports.
Applying: (10 mins.)
- On the class wiki, have students briefly (250 words) write about their experience.

-What did you include in your story to make it fit in?
