It's not always easy to spot an illegitimate site. Compare the live feed of headlines on the left from a legitimate news site (CNN) to those on the right from a fake news site (The Onion). Can you tell any differences? Sometimes the real news seems fake and the fake news seems real. How can we trust anyone when even the Winnipeg Sun published a fake story about the Canadian Museum for Human Rights being converted into a water park? (Conveniently, this story was released on March 31). But sometimes people don't get the joke. Whether it be an April Fool's prank or The Onion, the public often has a tough time distinguishing fact from fiction. Literally Unbelievable is a website dedicated to capturing instances of people on Facebook thinking that The Onion is real. |
